Drop in insolvencies not expected to last
The latest insolvency figures have just been released, showing that last year`s gradual drop-off in insolvencies carried on as we entered 2011.
Last year brought both good news and bad in terms of insolvencies. The overall total for the year was an all-time high in England and Wales, but as the year went on we saw an improvement, with fewer people entering insolvency in each quarter.
22% of Brits `struggling to make ends meet`
More than a fifth of Brits (22%) feel they have reached their `affordability tipping point` and wouldn`t be able to cope if their outgoings increased any further, according to research by moneysupermarket.com.
And 30% say their finances are so stretched that they couldn`t afford a £100 increase in their monthly living costs.
`£160 bill per family` to help Portugal
The latest EU country to be bailed out - Portugal - could cost Britain over £4bn, the equivalent of £160 per household.
After Greece and Ireland, Portugal has become the third country to admit it really needs financial help. It has now agreed to a `rescue package` of €78bn (£70bn), €12bn of which will go to support the country`s banks.
